So you have your first data entry job. It took you quite some time to get up the nerve to apply for the job, and finally, you have been hired to enter some phone book information into a database. And just when you are about to start, you discover that your computer gets messed up! Perhaps your monitor dies out on you, or your CPU crashes. What do you do?
You have the following options:
- You can let go of the job. Of course, this is usually unthinkable since you obviously went through so much effort already to get the job, and that means you probably really need it. Just go back to this option if none of the others would work for you, then.
- If you do not want to let go of the job, perhaps you can ask for an extension. Unfortunately, if this is your first project, it might not make for a good first impression, so it might be better to explore your other options before you go to your employer with your plight, no matter how valid. Remember, it is not his responsibility to take care of your work equipment, and generally he would not care, so you need to be man enough to face the problem.
- If you applied for the job to augment an existing job, you probably have access to a computer at your workplace. Of course, you should only try to ask permission for temporary use if you are in good terms with your boss. Technically you should not be using the office computer for your personal use, so be as transparent as possible with your boss, and explain that it is only a temporary setback until you get your home PC fixed. Be careful, though, because it might send signals to your boss that you are not happy with your current work and pay, and you should only treat this as your last recourse. Besides, if you already have a job, you most likely have the means to get your PC fixed as soon as possible anyway.
- The best solution so far would be to find other people you can perhaps borrow a laptop from as soon as possible. This will be easier if the job is only worth a week or two, or perhaps if it is longer, you can borrow someone else’s PC only for the time period it requires you to get your own computer fixed. If you are into the data entry job as your only source of income and you do not have any cash on hand to get your computer fixed before your first pay, you might be in a tighter bind; as such you might benefit from looking up close friends and relatives whose computers are available for a longer time.
- If there are any Internet cafes in your neighborhood, you can also opt to work there everyday until your computer comes back from the shop. This might cost you back some money, but at least you get to save your reputation while still earning the money set for the project.
Although you may find yourself embarrassed to try any of these options, if you really want to keep your data entry job in the midst of computer problems, you will need to swallow your pride any which way. But rest assured that things will turn out for the best.
