What to do if Your Computer Crashes

So you have your first data entry job. It took you quite some time to get up the nerve to apply for the job, and finally, you have been hired to enter some phone book information into a database. And just when you are about to start, you discover that your computer gets messed up! Perhaps your monitor dies out on you, or your CPU crashes. What do you do?

You have the following options:

  1. You can let go of the job. Of course, this is usually unthinkable since you obviously went through so much effort already to get the job, and that means you probably really need it. Just go back to this option if none of the others would work for you, then.
  2. If you do not want to let go of the job, perhaps you can ask for an extension. Unfortunately, if this is your first project, it might not make for a good first impression, so it might be better to explore your other options before you go to your employer with your plight, no matter how valid. Remember, it is not his responsibility to take care of your work equipment, and generally he would not care, so you need to be man enough to face the problem.
  3. If you applied for the job to augment an existing job, you probably have access to a computer at your workplace. Of course, you should only try to ask permission for temporary use if you are in good terms with your boss. Technically you should not be using the office computer for your personal use, so be as transparent as possible with your boss, and explain that it is only a temporary setback until you get your home PC fixed. Be careful, though, because it might send signals to your boss that you are not happy with your current work and pay, and you should only treat this as your last recourse. Besides, if you already have a job, you most likely have the means to get your PC fixed as soon as possible anyway.
  4. The best solution so far would be to find other people you can perhaps borrow a laptop from as soon as possible. This will be easier if the job is only worth a week or two, or perhaps if it is longer, you can borrow someone else’s PC only for the time period it requires you to get your own computer fixed. If you are into the data entry job as your only source of income and you do not have any cash on hand to get your computer fixed before your first pay, you might be in a tighter bind; as such you might benefit from looking up close friends and relatives whose computers are available for a longer time.
  5. If there are any Internet cafes in your neighborhood, you can also opt to work there everyday until your computer comes back from the shop. This might cost you back some money, but at least you get to save your reputation while still earning the money set for the project.

Although you may find yourself embarrassed to try any of these options, if you really want to keep your data entry job in the midst of computer problems, you will need to swallow your pride any which way. But rest assured that things will turn out for the best.

Working online may look different compared to traditional office settings, but it still involves ways in which you can impress your client or employer. Interestingly, since you do not have the chance to wow your client or employer from face-to-face meetings, this means that your main ways of making a good impression is dependent on your work output.

Here are main ways in which you can show your clients or employer that you are serious about giving quality output in your data entry job:

  1. Be sure to follow directions properly. For data entry jobs, this is very crucial, since you can copy certain information but if you do not follow specific formats, it may require a do-over, either by you yourself or by other workers. As such it will result in much time wasted, and productivity is sacrificed. No employer or client will appreciate paying you for work that needs to be redone. If ever some instructions do not seem clear to you, do not be afraid to ask questions to clarify. It is better to spend some time clarifying rather than delivering work that you will need to do all over again.
  2. Spend your extra time improving the skills needed for your data entry job. For example, if you need to type fast and you find room for improvement, you can practice many typing exercises. If you have trouble reading, you can find time to have your eyes checked for the best glasses you need to perform more efficiently.
  3. Give your best in every job. This includes having a standard of excellence on your own even without anyone breathing down your neck. This is crucial because it will spell a difference that any client can see in the outcome. A good output speaks more volumes than any amount of back-rubbing can do. If your employer or client sees your quality, he will certainly notice and be more confident giving you more work as he sees you capable of doing it.
  4. Be aware of deadlines and respect them. This is also an important aspect of any data entry job. As long as you do the job well and keep to a regular work schedule, you will not need to worry about missing deadlines. When you consistently meet deadlines, you will give an impression of being reliable and it is an important trait that any client will like. After all, you are being paid to deliver work on time. If at any time you may find that you cannot meet a certain deadline, being open with your employer or client will make a big difference; just be willing to share your concerns so that he will understand the factors behind a possible delay.

These basic tips should give you a basic idea of how you can perform well in your data entry job. Rest assured as you stick to these standards of performance, you will enjoy your career as you get propelled to higher levels of jobs among a respected pool of clients.

If this is your first time to be employed doing a home-based online job, you may be excited and a little apprehensive. After all, you may have never met your client or employer personally, and as such you may not know how best to deal with him in order to assure your future in this field.

There are actually some basic things that you can remember in order to make your first job sail by smoothly, either propelling you to pay raise or even recommendations to more clients and employers.

1. First, be confident of yourself without being arrogant. This includes knowing that you are a good addition to the company. This is crucial because when you feel incompetent or unwanted, you will normally act out that belief, even if you are actually indeed very skilled. Also, if you feel insecure, you may take every little comment as being critical or insulting, which may result in misunderstandings with your client, employer, or even online colleagues.

2. Concentrate on giving your best to your work. This is because high quality work will always be preferred over shoddy work, and this can spell the difference about how you are perceived on the virtual marketplace. If you can be trusted to deliver quality work, employers and clients know that they can give you high enough pay as you will surely deliver the work that they need.

3. If you can meet deadlines ahead of schedule, it might be all the better. It shows clients that you are competent and serious about your job. Of course, it does not mean that you need to submit everything ahead of time, but do everything in your power to meet deadlines. For data entry jobs, especially, a lot of times the clients have strict deadlines because your work will still be channeled to the next person in line who needs to do something with the information you have encoded.

4. Pay attention to detail. This is crucial for data entry work, because the slightest misspelling or typo could mean a whole world of difference. It would help if you are already meticulous, but if not, you can still develop the skill. Train yourself to be quick in spotting errors, perhaps through puzzles or spot-the-difference games in the newspaper, or even learning Sudoku.

5. Be humble enough to admit mistakes. While it might be best in the long run to avoid making them, but just in case you do fail at some point, clients would appreciate an honest admittance of fault rather than a defensive stance that shows you never to be wrong, especially if it is obvious that you are in the wrong. As such, being quick to apologize, sincerely, is a key to maintaining a good relationship with your client or employer. Of course, do not expect him to do the same for you, or else you will only get frustrated.

These basic tips should give you a good head start on your online job career, and it will also make everyday much lighter and easier as you curb relationship problems in the bud!
